Join Me This Weekend at Hearts at Home – Rochester, MN

Join Me This Weekend at Hearts at Home

Rochester, MN

I head out this Thursday to my last conference of the year! My destination is Rochester, MN where will join thousands of other moms for the Hearts at Home conference. This organization has been blessing, equipping and inspiriting mothers since 1994. I am honored to be one of their speakers for this regional event.

On Friday I will be presenting two of my favorite workshops: Attention Obsessive-Compulsive, Perfectionist, Control-Freaks: CHILL OUT and a workshop, brand-new in 2015,  What about ‘That Child’? Both are near and dear to my heart as they are born out of my own experience and God’s glorious, redemptive work in my life. I am grateful for His compassionate patience with me as He gently teaches me.

Attention Obsessive-Compulsive-Perfectionist-Control-Freaks: CHILL OUT!

As an obsessive-compulsive-perfectionist-control-freak herself, Rachael Carman discusses how we can often be our own worst enemy when it comes to enjoying motherhood. Are you tied to a schedule? Do you shiver at the idea of change or adjustment? Are you missing out on significant moments because you are focused on the trivial? It’s time to C.H.I.L.L. O.U.T.! Come learn how to relax and let go of the little things.

What About ‘That Child’?

No matter what description you give them, ADD, ADHD, distracted, hyper-active, kinetic, or hyper-focused, they can drive us crazy. They are experts at pushing our buttons and causing us frustration. We love them because they are our children, and we are supposed to, but sometimes we don’t like them very much. We are ashamed to admit that we don’t know what to do, but we simply don’t. So what precious face flashes into your mind when you hear the phrase ‘that child’? Come join Rachael as she shares proactive steps you can take to gain a fresh perspective.

I have shared these workshops throughout this year and the response has been over whelming. May God be glorified as we finish strong this weekend in Minnesota.  You can find downloadable outlines for both of my presentations on my Resource Page. I’m looking forward to meeting you-please stop by and say hello!

Off to the Philippines!

Off to the Philippines!

Off to the Philippines!

Davis and I will be leaving on Tuesday, October 13 for Manila, returning on the following Tuesday. This will be our first time to the Philippines and we are excited about the ministry opportunity. You can see the press release and read about the conference, “Ready for the World” here.

Davis will be presenting on Friday, October 16, 2015: “I Believe in Homeschooling” and on Saturday, October 17, 2015: “Give Me One Good Reason to Homeschool”. I will also be presenting twice, on Friday, October 16, 2015: “How to Really Live” and on Saturday, October 17, 2015 I will be one of two keynotes presenting: “Teaching Foundational Truth”.

We would appreciate your prayers.

  1. Pray for travel mercies. We are facing a challenging travel itinerary. Please pray that we can get some sleep on the plane.
  2. Pray for our continued preparation for presentations. Pray that God will be glorified through us, that we would be sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
  3. Pray that we will have eyes to see and ears to hear what God would like to show us and teach us. Pray that we would be able to focus on each person.
  4. Pray that parents would be encouraged and challenged. Pray that those who attend will come with teachable hearts, seeking God.

Thanks in advance for your prayers. By praying for us you will be blessed and you will be a blessing to your brothers and sisters in the Philippines. I will be telling them that my friends back home are praying for them. I know that they will be encouraged that you care enough to intercede for them.

When Doubt Creeps in, Hope Revives

We all have moments of doubt about this homeschool journey. We wonder if we are doing the right thing or if we are messing our kids up. You are not alone in your desperate moments. The Bible is replete with accounts of men and women whose stories are real and raw. Come and let’s discuss dangers that can lead to doubt and safeguards against it. Come get your hope renewed!

1-2 PM

How Many Times do I have to Tell You?

We’ve all said it. In fact we’ve said it over and over. “Look at me!” “Take out the trash!” “Hold my hand.” In her book by the same title, Rachael shares about the things she has found herself saying to her children. In this session she will dare you to consider what you’re saying to your kids in light of the fact that God wants to speak to your heart. The book offers the opportunity to shift the way you think about what you’re saying to your children.

8-10 PM

A Night of Real Refreshment

This time is a gift from Teach Them Diligently and Apologia to the hard-working, homeschooling moms at the TTD conference! We want to invite you to join us for a time of fellowship and fun. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to meet friends, make new friends, laugh, consider and pray together. Come join us as we relax, reflect and refresh ourselves together!

How to Have a HEART for Your Kids

In Proverbs 4:23 Solomon wisely wrote, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” As we approach a heart relationship with our children, we need to focus our efforts on what really matters. As with so many things, the first step to having a heart is wanting to have a heart. This workshop uses the word H.E.A.R.T. as an acronym to suggest what really matters from a Biblical viewpoint.

3:30-4:30 PM

What about ‘That’ Child?

What face comes to mind when you hear ‘that child’? Do you smile or scowl when you see that face? Do you see yourself in that face? Do you struggle to like that child? Does it seem difficult? Impossible? That child is a world changer. God has a plan for that child. All of that energy, all those questions, all that strength, all THAT, is God-given for His glory. Come learn strategies for learning to like that child, to embrace that child, to train that child. They are worth it and He is worthy!

We will be traveling Thursday to join the CHOIS leadership and minister to homeschooling families on Friday and Saturday. I would appreciate your prayers as we travel and present. If you are in the area, I hope you will join us. I’d love to meet you and hear about your journey and His faithfulness.

May God be glorified!

Friday

Keynote: 8:45-10:15am    Me? Homeschool?

Rachael didn’t always dream about homeschooling. In fact she made fun of home schooling. Then God called her to the adventure of a lifetime. Come and hear how she and Davis came to the decision to homeschool their children. Their story provides great encouragement and inspiration for families trying to decide whether or not to homeschool and for those in a difficult first or second year.

10:45-11:45am    Living Outside the Normal Box

As home educators unfamiliar with school traffic, bus routes, and hall passes, we are bringing up our kids outside the normal box of public education. We have not chosen the predetermined prescription for our children’s education but instead have embraced an individualized approach acknowledging God’s unique design and plan for each child. But living outside the box can be lonely, confusing, and scary. How do we survive life out here? Even better, how do we encourage our kids to continue their out-of-the-box thinking as they go forward in their lives?

1:30-2:30pm    What about That Child?

What face comes to mind when you hear ‘that child’? Do you smile or scowl when you see that face? Do you see yourself in that face? Do you struggle to like that child? Does it seem difficult? Impossible? That child is a world changer. God has a plan for that child. All of that energy, all those questions, all that strength, all THAT, is God-given for His glory. Come learn strategies for learning to like that child, to embrace that child, to train that child. They are worth it and He is worthy!

3:00-4:00pm    When Doubt Creeps In

We all have moments of doubt about this homeschool journey. We wonder if we are doing the right thing or if we are messing our kids up. If we are not careful we can fall headlong into despondency and distress. We can start to flounder and wring our hands. The forerunner of Christ had such a moment. John the Baptist found himself questioning his own call. Sitting in prison, things were not going the way he thought they should be. You are not alone in your desperate moments. Come and learn how Jesus responded to John’s doubt. Come, have your hope renewed!

Saturday

10:45-11:45am    Teaching Your Kids to BLESS

How do you practically teach your kids to bless one another? Rachael Carman teaches an easy-to-remember lesson with five specific ways that you and your kids can bless each other with words and actions.

1:30-2:30pm    Stop Wresting and Start Resting

Most of us are doers. Wrestling feels like we are doing something, while resting doesn’t. But God calls us to rest in His sovereignty—to trust Him to submit to His plan, His will, His way. What does that look like? How does a wrestler become a rester? Come and see how to start today.

3:00-4:00pm   Seven Simple Steps to Sanity

Ever feel like you are about to lose your mind as a stay-at-home mom? There is so much to do and so little time. How do you balance it all? How do you know what to do and what not to do? In this presentation, you will laugh at yourself as you see how insane our culture is and how peaceful walking with God can be.

Keynote: 4:30-5:30 How to Have a HEART

Rachael Carman uses the word H.E.A.R.T. as an acronym to suggest what matters most from a biblical viewpoint. God has sent these children into your home at this specific time for His glorious purposes. Indeed, you have been invited on the adventure of a lifetime—a journey on which you will see walls fall, seas be parted, and giants be slain. You don’t need special skills or training for this journey; you need only to seek God and hold tight to His mighty hand! As with so many things, the first step to having a heart for your children is knowing your heavenly Father.

*Don’t forget!  You can download your outlines for each of these sessions (free) on my Resource page!  Download before or after you join me in any of these sessions!

Three of these presentations I have given at the other two Teach Them Diligently conferences this year. The new one on the docket for DC is “Overcoming Doubt, Hope Revives”. This presentation is interactive as we discuss several various characters from the Bible and their moments of doubt, how they handled them and how God showed Himself mighty through them. I will suggest 5 warning signs for doubt and 5 strategies for reviving hope! Come and join us as we seek to defy doubt and embrace hope.
We are already here in DC as we just came from the graduation of our oldest son from the King’s College in NYC. We have the other six with us and are enjoying the sites in DC. I will be in and out of the booth at Apologia during the conference since all the kids are with me, but I will make it a point to be at the booth 2-3 Thursday, Friday and Saturday handing out M&Ms in exchange for a Bible verse. We may run into each other in the vendor hall as I look for some treasures for our year. Either way, I hope we will get a chance to talk with you-I’d love to meet you!
Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Join Me at OCHEC-OKC Homeschool Convention

My conference schedule continues this weekend with the homeschool conference in Oklahoma City where Davis and I are keynoting. We are looking forward to ministering to families together. We will have four of our kids with us at this conference which we also enjoy. “The Principal-Teacher Principle” will be our kick-off workshop Friday morning. This presentation highlights some fundamental opportunities we can capitalize on in our marriages, as parents and as home educators. We look at these roles as concentric circles which complement each other best when we overlay them. Come learn how!

During the weekend I will be discussing the importance of being in God’s word, of meditating on it and memorizing it. The word of God can change our hearts if we allow it to do so. We must saturate ourselves in His truth so that we can be the salt and light He has called us to be.
I have set our a year-long challenge for my blog readers called M&Ms All Year Long.  You can read more about it and see the list of passages for each month of the year here.

Nashville Here I Come

The Teach Them Diligently conference will be in Nashville, TN this weekend March 20-22, 2014 at the Opryland Gaylord Hotel. I am honored to be just one of a host of speakers who will be there to encourage each audience member on their homeschool journey.
I will be speaking four times:
1)   Thursday 3/20 @ 5:00pm  – How to have a HEART
2)   Thursday 3/20 @ 8:00pm – Soaring Beyond Survival
3)   Friday 3/21 @ 9:00am  – Attention Obsessive-Compulsive, Perfectionistic, Controll-Freaks: CHILL OUT!
4)   Saturday 3/22 @ 5:00pm  – Stop Wrestling and Start Resting
You can see the whole schedule including the room assignments at this link from Teach Them Diligently
The simple outlines for these presentations are available on my Presentation Outline page. You can print them out and bring them with you to the sessions. I would love to meet you. Please come to one of my workshops or to the Apologia and say hello!
I am already preparing and praying through these presentations. Each of them represents a significant lesson God has taught me as we have homeschooled our own children.
HEART” is all about how God showed me that I had allowed my heart to become hardened by the cultural norms.
In “Soaring” I discuss the fact that the wilderness is not God’s plan; the Promise Land is. We need not settle for mere survival when we were made to soar.
The “CHILL OUT” presentation came about as a result of watching numerous moms throw in the towel and give up because they were unwilling to relax.
My last presentation this weekend is entitled “Stop Wrestling and Start Resting.” It is always a thrill to develop a new talk and this one is intensely personal. I believe too many of us waste far too much valuable time resisting and rejecting God’s will and way. I hope you will join me as we explore ways we can embrace the peace that transcends all understanding.
Here’s the deal: I am still learning! I don’t have this whole thing figured out. The way I see it we are on this journey together. God is a patient teacher. He loves us (and our children) more than we can imagine. As we persevere, He walks each step with us. This homeschool choice is so much more than an educational choice. While we are distracted by the academics, He is working on a much deeper level—our hearts.
Far too many homeschooling parents try to do it alone and don’t attend a conference. I pray that God will grant you an opportunity to attend an event in your area. God desires to meet you exactly where you are. That is what happened to us. The first conference Davis and I ever went to changed our lives. Take the time to go. Going as a couple and or family is especially powerful. Together you will encounter other families and speakers and ministries who desire to help you disciple your children for God’s glory.
This weekend I will be at the Apologia booth Friday and Saturday morning from 10:30 – 12:00. I will probably be there other times as well, and I hope to see you. Please stop by and say hello. I’ll have chocolate to share! I would love to hear all about what God is teaching you and how He is showing Himself faithful. We all have a story to tell and I’d love to hear yours. Come by the booth and share it with me, or stop me if you see me browsing in the vendor hall. I would love to meet you!
Check out my complete conference schedule here (link ?). I will be at all four of the Teach Them Diligently conferences in TN, SC, DC, and TX. I will also be speaking at four state conferences: CAPE-NM; CHEC-OK, NCHE-NC, and THSC-TX.
I would appreciate your prayers as I seek to help the weary and encourage the faint-hearted to stand firm, persevere, and continue on.
