Character Qualities

Character Qualities

When we first started homeschooling the push for teaching character was in full swing. It was huge in the public school system. It also permeated the homeschooling curriculum offerings. Character lists and lessons forced themselves into center stage.

I was a young mom then with two young sons. One strong willed and one not, struggling to figure out how to do this motherhood thing. I figured out quickly that I needed a way to communicate my expectations to my boys effectively and efficiently. When we were in public I needed to be able to say a word that we had already defined in discussions, which they would understand and could cooperate with.

Character Quality: Endurance

I found several lists of character qualities, but they did not have definitions that my boys could understand. They needed simple, clear explanations. Further, I wanted to have Scripture as the anchor for each quality as well as a Bible character who demonstrated that particular quality in their lives.

This list and its corresponding definitions have been growing and expanding over the 17 years we have been homeschooling. I have referred to several different lists over the years as well as added my own. Some of the lists I have used include: Character First!; “The Character of Jesus” by Charles Edward Jefferson; Character Council of Greater Cincinnati; Character that Counts; The Duggar Family Character Chart; and Discipleship Tools. I have searched the Scriptures for the references I believe to be the best. The Bible character examples are unique to me. It is my hope that these will bless your family as they have blessed ours!

So I’m rolling out the list that I have developed over the course of seventeen  years. I do not claim that the list is exhaustive or perfect. I have added some over the years and many times I have changed the descriptions to be more clear.

Each Friday I will share a new Character Quality with you along with it’s definition, Bible Verse, Bible Character and a {free} coloring page for you to download.  You can always find a link to each of these posts right here on this page as well.  Oh, and by the way, you can download the coloring page “Character Qualities” as a cover page to create a fun journal with your kids!

Here’s a list of the qualities in the series:

  1. Thank you so much! I love having things for my kids to color while teaching them the Bible since they are like me & not able to just sit still.

  2. I ‘stumbled’ onto your website and love all of the encouraging words & thoughts. Thank you for shearing God’s word in a creative way.

  3. This resource is God’s “new mercy” for me today. I am thrilled to be able to use your work as I teach my children. You are so generous to allow the download free. Thank you.

  4. Love these! Thanks for sharing. Any chance we could see a more boyish graphic for the coloring pages?

    1. Hi Julie!  I’m so glad you like them.  Right now I am just using my sunflower logo.  But that does sound like a nice idea.  Thanks so much!

  5. Love your “Character Qualities”! Would love to see you do “Integrity”. I will be teaching a workshop on integrity at our Church Girls Camp in June and would love to have this to share with our girls.
    Thanks!

  6. Thank you for sharing these. I have been printing them out for my kids to color as we cover the various character qualities. Do you have plans to make a sheet for deference/respect?

  7. Thank you so much for sharing these. I am going to include them in a Character Study during our Homeschooling this next year. When I clicked on ‘Virtuous’ the lesson didn’t show up, only the picture. Can you send me the lesson?
    God Bless, Jeanette
