Character Quality: Constancy

A mathematical constant is a fixed number that does not change as opposed to a variable which does change.

Constancy in character means that someone’s life, the way they live is consistent. For a Christian constancy means living consistent with God’s word.  Though our actions fall short, our focus remains constant, focused on God and His glory.

The apostle John lived constancy. Tradition holds that John was the youngest of the disciples. A fisherman by trade, John followed Jesus faithfully all the way to the cross. John and his brother James were known as the ‘sons of thunder’ He became one of the ‘inner circle’ of three along with his brother James and Peter.

Perhaps the most poignant moments in John’s life as a disciple of Jesus occurred at the foot of the cross. As Jesus hung there having been deserted by all of the other disciples, He charged John with the care of His mother, Mary. John witnessed Jesus as he hung there with the sin of the world on His shoulders and with His physical body in unspeakable pain. John didn’t run away and desert; he remained till the end.

I believe it is this relationship between Mary, Jesus’ mother, and John that affected the rest of his life. John wrote 5 books: the gospel of John, I, II and III John and Revelation. The book of John is the most unique of the other gospels. It is considered reflective in its style. 92% of the gospel of John is unique to the book. He had a unique perspective as one of Jesus’ inner circle along with his time with Mary.

John lived a life of constancy. His actions reflected his conviction. He faithful testified about what he had witnesses and encouraged others to do the same. May we live lives which honor and glorify God. May we be faithful witnesses.

I had it going on—or so I thought. After surviving sixty-three months of pregnancy, countless sleepless nights, and 35,000+ diapers, this one-time control freak encountered God’s grace. And I’m here to encourage you to do the same! I love encouraging and inspiring moms to grow deeper in their walk and relationship with our Heavenly Father.

I’ve been married to my beloved, Davis, since 1986; our life has been a roller-coaster ride, with God at the controls. We have seven kids and let me tell you our family loves to laugh! I enjoy playing in the dirt, eating dark chocolate, and walking on the beach. I’m an author and speaker and I am passionate about helping moms not only survive motherhood, but draw near to the Father and thrive in motherhood.

I’m so glad you’re here.

  1. Rachel, I had the opportunity to hear you at THSC this year! Front row on the aisle with you! And it was a time of blessing-thank you! We are focusing, as a family, on the character trait of trustworthiness for the school year. Could you do that one soon, please? ;-D THANK YOU for your encouragement!
